WHAT IS A BUS ACCIDENT CLAIM?

If a bus or coach journey left you injured, you may be entitled to compensation.

A bus accident claim is a personal injury claim against the party at fault when you're hurt on or by a bus or coach. Bus and coach operators owe their passengers and other road users a clear duty of care, so when a sudden jolt, an emergency stop, a closing door or a collision causes injury, the operator (or another driver) can be held responsible. You don't need to have been a passenger – pedestrians and cyclists hit by a bus can claim too.

Not sure whether you have a case? Try our free personal injury claim calculator for a quick idea of what your claim could be worth, or read more about wider road traffic accident claims. If the bus was a service like First, Stagecoach or Arriva, their insurer handles the claim – you can also check your rights as a passenger on GOV.UK.

What you can claim for

Pain & suffering
Compensation for the injury itself and how it affects your daily life.
Lost earnings
Wages or income lost while you recover, including future loss if you can't return fully.
Medical costs
Physiotherapy, prescriptions, private treatment and any care you've needed.
Travel expenses
Taxis, parking and travel to appointments when you couldn't use your usual transport.
Care & assistance
The value of help from family or carers with everyday tasks while you healed.
Damaged belongings
Repair or replacement of phones, glasses, bikes and other items broken in the accident.

You may have a claim if…

You were injured in the last 3 years (longer for children and protected parties)
The accident wasn't mainly your fault – or was only partly your fault
You were a passenger, pedestrian, cyclist or another driver
Your injury was caused by a bus, coach or its driver's actions

Bus & coach accident claim FAQs

Can I make a bus accident claim on No Win No Fee?+
Yes. We take almost all bus and coach accident claims on a No Win No Fee basis, so there's nothing to pay up front and no fee at all if your claim doesn't succeed. If you win, a success fee is deducted from your compensation – capped at 25% of certain damages for personal injury – and we'll explain every figure clearly before you sign anything.
How long do I have to make a claim?+
In England and Wales you usually have 3 years from the date of the accident to start a bus or coach accident claim. There are important exceptions: if you were under 18, the 3 years run from your 18th birthday, and different rules apply for people who lack mental capacity. It's always best to get advice early while CCTV and witness details are still available.
I was a passenger and don't know whose fault it was. Can I still claim?+
Yes. As a passenger you're rarely to blame, so you can usually claim whether the bus driver was at fault or another vehicle caused the crash. We'll investigate who was responsible – sometimes more than one party – and pursue the right insurer, so you don't have to work it out yourself.
What if there was no obvious collision, just a sudden stop or jolt?+
You can still claim. Many bus injuries happen without a crash – an emergency stop, harsh braking or pulling away while you're still moving can throw you against a pole, seat or the floor. If the driver could reasonably have driven more carefully, the operator may be liable for your injuries.
I'm a pedestrian or cyclist who was hit by a bus. Do I have a claim?+
Very likely, yes. Bus and coach operators owe a duty of care to everyone on the road, not just passengers. If a bus or coach hit you while you were walking or cycling, you may be able to claim for your injuries and financial losses in the same way a passenger would.
How much compensation could I get for a bus accident?+
It depends on how serious your injury is and the losses you've had. As a rough guide, minor soft-tissue injuries may be worth a few thousand pounds, while serious or lasting injuries can be worth much more, plus lost earnings and expenses. These figures are illustrative only – we'll give you a realistic estimate once we understand your situation.
