How hearing loss and tinnitus compensation is calculated

An industrial deafness claim is valued using the Judicial College Guidelines. The award turns on how much hearing you have lost, whether one or both ears are affected, and whether you also have tinnitus. Mild noise-induced hearing loss starts at a few thousand pounds; total deafness in both ears can exceed £100,000.

Tinnitus compensation is assessed alongside the hearing loss itself. Persistent ringing that disturbs your sleep or concentration is valued separately and added to the award — which is why constant tinnitus can be worth considerably more than mild, occasional ringing.

On top of the injury itself you can claim your financial losses: hearing aids and their replacement, medical costs, travel, and any lost earnings if your hearing has affected your work.

A noise induced hearing loss claim is usually brought against a former employer who exposed you to damaging noise without adequate protection. Crucially, the three-year time limit runs from when you first realised your hearing loss was noise-related — not from when the exposure happened — so decades-old exposure is very often still claimable.

Do I have an industrial deafness claim?

Your questions answered

How much compensation will I get for industrial deafness?+
It depends on how much hearing you have lost, whether one or both ears are affected and whether you have tinnitus. Mild noise-induced hearing loss is typically worth several thousand pounds; severe or total loss in both ears can be worth £45,000–£110,000 or more, plus hearing aids, medical costs and any lost earnings.
How much is tinnitus compensation worth?+
Tinnitus is valued alongside your hearing loss rather than on its own. Mild, occasional ringing adds a modest amount; constant tinnitus that disturbs your sleep or concentration is valued significantly higher. If you have tinnitus without measurable hearing loss you may still have a claim — it is worth a free check.
Can I claim if the company I worked for no longer exists?+
Yes. Industrial deafness claims are paid by the employer’s liability insurer that covered the company at the time, not by the company itself. We trace the correct historic insurer for you, and a business having closed is not a barrier to claiming.
Is there a time limit for a noise induced hearing loss claim?+
Usually three years — but it runs from the date you first knew (or reasonably should have known) that your hearing loss was caused by noise, not from when you were exposed. That is why people who left a noisy job decades ago can often still bring a claim. Get it checked rather than assuming you are out of time.
How is noise-induced hearing loss proven?+
A hearing test (audiogram) shows the distinctive pattern of noise damage, typically a “notch” at around 4kHz. A medical expert then reports on the cause and separates any age-related loss from the noise-related loss. We arrange all of this as part of your claim.
Will age-related hearing loss reduce my claim?+
Some hearing loss is a normal part of ageing, and the medical expert will separate that from the damage caused by noise. Your compensation reflects the noise-related portion — which is precisely why an expert audiogram matters rather than a rough estimate.
Do I have to pay anything upfront?+
No. Suitable hearing loss claims are run on a No Win No Fee basis — nothing to pay upfront and nothing to pay us if the claim does not succeed. The terms are agreed with you in writing before any work begins.
