How accident at work compensation is worked out

Your compensation has two parts. General damages cover the injury itself — the pain, suffering and how it affects your life — and are valued using the Judicial College Guidelines and comparable past cases. Special damages cover your financial losses: lost earnings, treatment, care, travel and equipment.

Your employer has a legal duty to keep you safe at work. If they breached that duty — an unsafe system of work, faulty equipment, no training or inadequate PPE — and you were hurt as a result, you can usually claim on a No Win No Fee basis.

Your questions answered

How much compensation for an accident at work?+
It depends on the injury and its impact. Awards for the injury itself follow the Judicial College Guidelines — from around £1,000 for minor injuries to £50,000+ for serious ones — plus your financial losses such as lost earnings and treatment. Our free assessment gives you an accurate, personalised figure.
Can I be sacked for claiming against my employer?+
It is unlawful to dismiss or treat you unfairly for making a genuine personal injury claim. Your claim is against your employer’s insurance, not their pocket, and we’ll advise you on your protections throughout.
What if the accident was partly my fault?+
You may still claim. Compensation can be reduced for "contributory negligence" to reflect your share, but a partial fault rarely stops a valid claim. It’s worth checking with us for free.
Is there a time limit?+
Usually three years from the date of the accident (or from when you realised your injury was work-related). Some exceptions apply, so contact us as early as you can.
