How CICA criminal injury compensation works
Compensation for victims of violent crime is paid through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) under a fixed tariff — set amounts for each type of injury, from around £1,000 to £250,000+ for the most serious. Where you have more than one injury, the tariff pays the highest in full plus a proportion of the others.
You may also recover lost earnings and special expenses if you’re unable to work for more than 28 weeks. Strict rules apply, so it pays to get advice — we guide victims through the whole process.
You were an innocent victim of a violent crime in England or Wales.
You reported the crime to the police as soon as reasonably possible.
You apply within two years of the incident (extensions apply for children and exceptional cases).
You co-operate with the police and CICA. Certain unspent criminal convictions can affect an award.
Your questions answered
What is a CICA claim?+
CICA — the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority — is a government scheme that compensates innocent victims of violent crime, even if the attacker was never caught or convicted. Awards follow a fixed tariff based on your injuries. We act for claimants across England & Wales.
Do I need to report the crime to the police?+
Yes. To be eligible you must have reported the incident to the police as soon as reasonably practicable and co-operated with any investigation. We can help if you’re unsure whether your report qualifies.
How long do I have to claim?+
Usually two years from the date of the incident, though this can be extended for children or where it wasn’t reasonable to apply sooner (for example, historic abuse). Contact us for a free eligibility check.
Do I need a solicitor for a CICA claim?+
You can apply yourself, but CICA claims are often undervalued or refused on technicalities. We make sure your injuries are properly evidenced and valued, and we handle the appeals process if needed.
